A 31-year-old man has been sentenced after several buses were broken into at a Bolton depot last week.

Daniel Whiteside, 31, of Kent Court, Bolton, was found guilty of theft from a motor vehicle and sentenced to a community order, victim surcharge and rehabilitation requirement when he appeared at Manchester Magistrates' Court on Saturday, April 27.

This comes after an incident on Goodwin Street was reported to Greater Manchester Police at around 5am on April 26 when 16 computer tablets were stolen from vehicles.

Following an investigation by the police’s Transport Unit, officers arrested a suspect later on Friday, April 26.

Police Sergeant Anthony Evason, from GMP's Transport Unit Tasking Team, said: "I hope this arrest provides reassurance to the public that our officers will always seek to take positive action against anyone suspected of committing a crime.”

Kate Green, TfGM’s TravelSafe Partnership Manager, said: “We welcome the swift intervention taken by Diamond Bus and the police to resolve this issue within a day of the theft from the depot being reported.

"Quick thinking from Diamond Bus also meant contingency arrangements were enacted meaning no disruption to any customers journeys.

“Fortunately tracking technology installed on the tablets meant that police were to recover them.

"Additional security measures installed on the devices also means they cannot be used as a regular tablet.

“This is a positive outcome for the TravelSafe Partnership, and a great example of our agencies working together for the benefit of the travelling public.”
